Following the release of her first film, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007), Kagti was approached by several production houses to direct their next film. However, unable to find any films that interested her, Kagti began working on a new script with long-time friend Zoya Akhtar in early 2010. She said, "Zoya and I thought of the story and co-wrote it. We do a lot of writing together. We are also best friends so it is fun and there is a huge comfort factor." Upon finalizing the story, she approached Aamir Khan with the film in November 2010 who instantly agreed to produce and star in it. Since the start of pre-production, the project has faced several speculations regarding its title. On November 11, 2011, Khan confirmed that the film was titled Talaash.
Casting and filming
In an interview with The Indian Express, Kagti revealed that prior to casting Khan as the film's main protagonist, she had initially approached him with another project in mind, which didn't work out.[6] Several days later, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji were signed on by the director to star opposite Khan.[7] Prior to the start of principal photography, the actors were required to attend acting workshops and sign a non-disclosure agreement.[8]
March 2011 saw the start of principal photography with Khan and Mukerji in Mumbai, India.[9] For a specific scene involving Khan and Kapoor, it was rumored that both the actors would shoot for it in a red-light district.[10] Kagti, however dismissed it, explaining that it wouldn't be safe to do so; the scene was later shot at the Leopold Cafe on Colaba Causeway.[8] Production of the film's second phase continued with the entire cast in Pondicherry and was completed by the end of August.[11] The film's final phase was expected to commence the following month in the industrial town of Khopoli, where an underwater shot was expected to take place.[12] However, due to some visibility problems, the shot was cancelled and was later filmed at an undisclosed water studio in London.[13] Principal photography was completed by November 2011 where some of the remaining shots were filmed at the Bandstand Promenade
